Football Association of Ireland Backs Motion Calling for European Football Ban on Israeli Teams

Ireland's football governing body has voted in favor to present a formal motion to European football's governing body, calling for the banning of Israel from all European team and national competitions.

Basis of the Recommended Suspension

This motion, that had been put forward by Irish side Bohemians, highlighted claimed breaches by the Israel Football Association of a couple of important Uefa statutes.

  • Failure to apply and uphold an proper anti-racism policy.
  • Organisation of football teams in occupied Palestinian territories without the consent of the Palestinian Football Association.

Ballot Results and Next Steps

According to an official statement from the Irish FA, the resolution was supported by 74 votes, with seven against and two not voting.

The association plans to formally submit this request to the Uefa executive committee, asking for the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from European tournaments.

In an extraordinary general meeting of the FAI, an ordinary resolution was put to delegates. It was approved by a large margin.

Earlier Uefa Deliberations

Uefa had previously put on hold intentions to exclude Israeli football at the end of September, following the announcement of Donald Trump's proposed peace plan for the region.

While Uefa never publicly stated contemplating an extraordinary meeting on the issue, plans were understood to be quite advanced.

International Context

This Irish move follows similar calls in last autumn from the heads of Turkish and Norwegian governing bodies for Israel's suspension from global football.

These appeals were issued after United Nations experts urged world and European football bodies to ban the Israeli FA, referencing a UN investigation that claimed the country of acts of genocide during the war in Gaza.

The Israeli government has rejected these allegations and described the report as scandalous.

Possible Ramifications

Should Uefa decide to suspend the IFA, it would probably create tension with the United States government – co-hosts for the upcoming World Cup – which is firmly against such an action.

Even though the European body has the authority to exclude Israeli teams from its tournaments, it might not be able to prevent them from taking part in qualification for the World Cup, which is governed by world football's governing body.
